Why OT security? Operations technology comprises specially engineered hardware and software for the automation of industrial processes. It is used to monitor and control devices and processes in industry and companies. Examples include control systems such as plant and machine control systems, process control systems and distributed control systems (SCADA, DCS).
The digitalization of the economy not only brings efficiency, it also has its downsides. Attacks on IT security such as cybercrime and cyberattacks with hacks can trigger data theft, industrial espionage, blackmail, manipulation or costly outages and operational disruptions to services and infrastructure. At the end of 2022, the EU defined new cybersecurity requirements for companies in critical industries as part of the NIS2 Directive. By this, operators of critical infrastructure, i.e. essential services, in EU member countries are obliged to develop strategies and measures to minimize the risk of malware and cyberattacks.
